Burwood Acupuncture tips: acupressure LI4 (Hegu).

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves applying pressure to acupoints. It is used to relieve stress, alleviate pain, improve circulation, and promote overall well-being. It can be done with fingers, palms, or elbows. Many people use acupressure for headaches, nausea, tension, and other ailments.

LI 4 (hegu) is a commonly used point for self-care. Below you will learn how to locate the point, how to apply acupressure at this point, which ailments LI4 can help with, and who should not perform acupressure at this point.

Location: On the back of the hand, in the webbing between the thumb and index finger.

LI4 is the fourth point on the Large Intestine channel of the hand. It is also known as Hegu (pin yin), which means “the joining valley.”

This point regulates body temperature, relieves pain, and alleviates heat-related symptoms. Applying pressure to this point can help promote cooling and reduce inflammation,

Indications: neck pain, toothaches, facial pain, and headaches.

Method: Using the thumb and forefinger, grip the webbing and apply pressure. Use the forefinger to stabilise the flesh while massaging with the thumb in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. Apply firm pressure for 1-2 minutes. Breathe deeply and relax while applying pressure to maximise the benefits.

This can be performed several times per day, when pain is acute.

Cautions/contraindications:

  • Most people do not experience negative side effects from acupressure, which is a generally safe alternative healing technique. However, acupressure is not always the right treatment option.

  • LI 4 (hegu) is contraindicated explicitly during pregnancy because it promotes labour.

AVOID: acupressure on injured or inflamed skin, scars or rashes. After eating, taking narcotics or drinking alcohol.

Anyone interested in learning more about acupressure should speak with a healthcare professional.
